new discussion topics on Israel Potter...

...are over at Kirsten's section blog: http://19camlitkirsten.blogspot.com/

Leftover topics from Friday's question sheet include: did Melville himself hate this novel, and if so what does it matter; the sense of closure and alternate endings; the Gothic in Israel Potter; what's an adaptation; the idea of exile in IP; characters as metaphors for nations.

  1. I found this really cool Poe site recently and thought I'd share. I know this doesn't really fall under this category, but I wanted to post it.

  2. I think it'd be interesting to compare and contrast the relationships and roles in House of Mirth to other novels. The marriage game is something that plays out in many books about women, but is it a consistent portrayal or not?

  3. In regards to 'House of Mirth" we've been discussing the importance of considering the story in the context of war rather than as marriage-plot based, however, the influence of Jane Austen is apparent. Does anyone think that in addition to the societal critique the story might also have elements of literary critique?

  4. I think that it's interesting that in "House of Mirth" there seems to be little room for a middle class. The characters portrayed in the book are either wealthy or destitute--maybe this is because the middle class element of society is in the suburbs rather than the city.
